Summer's End

After a brief summer break (a trip to the lovely Crested Butte) we are back and gearing up for pie season at Wooden Spoon. I know, it seems so soon! But we have pastry boxes to fold and order forms to begin preparing for Thanksgiving and beyond. So while we watch the neighborhood shift into school schedules and more serious work routines, we will be doing the same, in a sense.

But before we move on to fall officially I wanted a few quick lines dedicated to Colorado peach season, my favorite time of year. Now, I may be biased, as I was born in this lovely state, but I think Colorado peaches are the best. I've tried Georgia peaches, Long Island white peaches and many more but still, Palisade turns out the best. This summer, I even had a chance to make a peach pie at home! So here's to peach season, we'll miss you when you are gone.




Our shop has now been open for 2 years & 2 months and we can't believe the transformation and growth of this once small neighborhood. Jason and I recall sleepy afternoons in 2010 when 32nd St. seemed to siesta from Federal to Tejon, but no more! Those days are gone. It has been great to meet new faces and build relationships with new regulars and just as great to watch the changes with our very first customers who have stuck with us since day one.

So on to September. We look forward to fall sweets, hot teas and soup to make it back on the menu! And of course, I aim to write more on this darn blog!!!!!

Breakfast Sandwich Monsters

Wooden Spoon churned through its first full year of baking on June 20th this summer and Jason and I are glad and thankful to have found ourselves on the very busy side of being busy! While we've done much baking and our pastry chefs have created delicious sweets during our first year, what we have been most surprised about is just how many breakfast sandwiches we've marched out of our kitchen, into your hands only to watch them disappear in your stomachs! We hadn't really planned on Jason being tied to the burner all day long, every day long. Pretty soon we'll need to hire a prep cook to do all the prep cooking that Jason can't seem to get to anymore. So, if we run out of sticky buns some wild Saturday morning and can't get around to making another batch, you know the reason. Blame it on the breakfast sandwich monsters. The good news is that Jason can make some darn good eggs.

And so we'll thank everyone again as we have in the past for offering up a very lovely and very successful first year to Wooden Spoon.

Well, our version anyways. We can barely keep them in the case! If you get a chance, and if they're not sold out, take a bite of one of these. I like to eat them Seinfeld-style but by all means, messy up your fingers and two front teeth if you like.

What Weekends Are Made of at the Spoon

Definition: sticky bun.

Dough rolling.

And rolling.

Rolled.

Rise to perfection.

A month later, I'll post this!

Upon returning to work on Tuesday, January 4, Jason asked me what kind of sugar cookies I wanted him to make and the thing that passed through my mind was, "What is the opposite of a Christmas cookie?" And so we made dinosaurs. Now, I'm not sure if dinosaur is the opposite of Christmas but we thought we'd give it a try. So Jason cut out the cookies and the next day Andrea went to town decorating these fine creatures, creatures that have walked right off the plates into distinction, I might add. Since the dinosaurs, we've also made ducks and fish. We're going to fit in as many animals as possible before it's on to hearts and everything Valentine's.

The holidays wrapped up nicely, especially the two, three-day-weekends that Jason and I attempted to stretch out as slowly as possible. Three days off is like a month long vacation and we had two of them back to back! We're glad to have made it through our first holiday season with no big knots in the ropes and we can now count the things that we'll change and improve on next year.
