A Little Holiday Rest

We successfully took a couple of days off after our Thanksgiving pie marathon!! Thank you to all who ordered from Wooden Spoon and we look forward to making even more pies next year.

So now we begin rolling out sugar cookie dough & gingerbread people for Christmas but first we'll start with a few batches of rugelach. My personal favorite dessert for the holidays is Buche de Noel!! When else can you eat chocolate cake rolled up with chocolate frosting along with funny looking mushrooms made out of sugar? As soon as we make our first holiday goods, I'll post some pictures here. All treats can be ordered for pick up from now until the new year. Don't forget to check out our facebook page for even more photos and information.

Happy Holidays!!

Plum Crazy!!

Plum Crazy? Yes. What was I thinking? I'm not a morning person. 4 o'what in the morning? Open a bakery?

I'm working on it.

Working on it means that Jason drives us to work while I'm still sleeping. Jason unlocks the front door, runs back to turn off the alarm (while I'm still sleeping) and Jason fills the three compartment sink to get us started for the day, while I'm still sleeping. Waking up begins when I make two lattes at the espresso machine and realize I need to order more milk. After about an hour and a half of not speaking (because it's better not to talk to me in the morning) we speak. I'm kind of awake, maybe. Then the case is filled and the sign is flipped and we've found ourselves in a routine.

Like waking up in the morning, I am clearly not the best at posting frequently to our blog but I will try to be more diligent! None-the-less, Wooden Spoon is in full swing. After a little over three months of non-stop work and meeting many new faces, we have our feet on the ground and our hands about ready to roll out some serious Thanksgiving pie dough!

Jason and I feel more than lucky to have found ourselves at 32nd and Zuni because of the support and excitement we've received from all of our neighbors & customers. Knowing that our little cafe is appreciated makes it that much easier to wake up at 4 a.m., six days a week. Not only do we have great support from our Highlands neighbors, we have been able to work with wonderful food folks who produce wonderful food. Without places like Trompeau Bakery, Coda Coffee & Morning Fresh Dairy, we could not create our own goods. So thank you all!

And most importantly to our tiny staff of 4, the best tiny staff of 4 any Wooden Spoon boss could find! Sometimes they even work on a Sunday, all 4 of them, so we can take an extra day off to clean our gutters at home!! Andrea, Carrie, Emily & Nikki, y'all are the best.

One week in...

Jason and I are spent, as was expected, but happy to be open and meeting new customers. Many have stopped by in hopes of finding lunch and we would like to announce that we'll now be serving it Tuesday thru Sunday from here on out. To begin with, the menu will include baguette sandwiches such as tarragon chicken salad and goat cheese with vegetables, as well as salads. As we progress we will offer soups, especially this fall and winter!

Tomorrow morning we will be testing out gluten free quiche. So far we have made gluten free shortbread cookies, flourless chocolate cake and we will always offer Noosa yogurt with house made granola. Slowly we will add more items to the gluten free menu and hope to be a spot where everyone can buy a fresh baked good for breakfast or lunch.

Our first week has been enjoyable and tiring. We can't say enough about the neighborhood we've found ourselves in and only hope to be a humble little store front with good food, atmosphere and company. Thanks for checking in and before too long we will link you to our real website. One thing at a time!

To eating savory and sweet,
J&J.

Opening!!!

It's finally here...we're opening! Tomorrow, Saturday the 19th, will be our first day of business. We have been through a long and grueling process to get here but are confident that it was all worth it. We literally picked up our business license today at 4:30, purchased goods to get us through the weekend and Jason started baking. He'll be back in the kitchen at 4 a.m. and the door will open at 7! While our menu will be a bit smaller this weekend, by Tuesday things should be in full swing.

Update...

Finally, an update! We have been patiently waiting to be signed off by the city in order to open for business and we want to thank those of you who have been stopping by in hopes of purchasing a few baked goods. While we can't give an exact date, we know for sure that the kitchen is stocked and ready to go when the day arrives.

The question that has been most frequently asked of us is whether or not we will be preparing gluten free goods. Jason and I do plan on developing that side of our menu in the very near future and suggestions are most welome! To start we will have flourless chocolate cake (one of my favorites), various salads & soups and a selection of yogurt, creme caramel and a few other sweet treats.

Thank you again for checking in and we will be seeing you soon,
Jason & Jeanette.

Opening...

After many years of working in the restaurant and baking industries, my husband and I are opening a cafe of our own in Denver's Highlands neighborhood. We look forward to cooking and baking with fresh, local ingredients to provide both the neighborhood and city with well crafted pastries, breads and cafe fare.

Wooden Spoon will be located at 2418 W. 32nd Avenue and will be opening late spring/early summer, 2010. Please check in as we update our blog with details and menu descriptions as the date gets closer.

We look forward to opening soon,
Jason & Jeanette Burgett.
